Change of Command - IW Leadership

Today at 1000 a.m. in Norfolk, Captain Stephanie Keck relieved Captain Roy Petty as Commanding Officer of the Navy Cyber Defense Operations Command. By any measure, Captain Petty has had a VERY SUCCESSFUL command tour. He will relieve Captain Stephanie Helm at the Naval War College. Captain Stephanie Helm is retiring.

Captain Roy S. Petty

Commanding Officer, Navy Cyber Defense Operations Command

The commander of Navy Cyber Defense Operations Command (NCDOC) was selected March 25 for the Federal 100 list of outstanding information technology (IT) leaders for 2008 during a ceremony in Washington.

Captain Roy Petty was the driving force behind an effort to strengthen the defenses of Navy networks and coordinate similar efforts across the Global Information Grid.

The Navy Cyber Defense Operations Command became the first Computer Network Defense Service Provider in the Defense Department to receive a Level 3 accreditation through that program. The accreditation, awarded by the Strategic Command, was based on a review of 124 metrics.

“Captain Petty leads from the front and maintains a vision for his command that far exceeds the daily expectations of a commanding officer,” said Robert Carey, the Navy Department’s chief information officer.

Interesting addendum here -- CAPT Petty has been named as director of NWC's Center for Cyber Conflict Studies.

It will be interesting to see what NWC will produce with an experienced "cyber warrior" there.
