Discipline

The most disciplined thing I’ve ever done in my life is the act of writing a book.”

- Jim Webb, (Virginia Senator and former Secretary of the Navy under President Ronald Reagan), as featured in an Esquire interview by K.K. Ottesen, 2008

Captain Lambert,

The good Senator Webb, has always wanted to be controversial, so his quote;“The most disciplined thing I’ve ever done in my life is the act of writing a book.”, is just what I would expect from him. He was a good Marine receiving many decorations for heroic efforts during Viet Nam. And his gung ho attitude led him to think woman had little place in the military services. He published an article “Women Can’t Fight” in 1979, and even though I have never fully read the article I felt it was unfair to women in general. That did not satisfy him and he even gave a speech, at the Naval Academy, while he was Secretary of the Navy, and he referred to women in the academy as “thunder thighs”, which I felt was in very poor taste and a very poor example of leadership.

I am aware of your appreciation for Sen. Webb’s writings, but I find that I have little time to read opinions written by an individual that I fundamentally disagree with.

Very Respectfully,
